Although in plain view, the Old Burying Point is shrouded in mystery and historical misconception. It is also commonly referred to as the Charter Street Cemetery and is the oldest Colonial American burial ground in Salem.
This is the final resting place of several notable historical figures including participants and witnesses in the Salem Witch Trials. Arguably, the most famous is the grave of Justice John Hathorne (colloquially known as 'The Hanging Judge' for his rigorous fervor to execute accused witches). Also important is the grave of the second wife of Giles Corey,
Mary Bright Corey.
